Humanities in Practice: Research, Pedagogy, and Principles for Emerging Professionals

NHC Graduate Student Summer Residency Program
July 14–18, 2025, at the National Humanities Center

collage about collaborative work

Since 2015, the National Humanities Center (NHC) has offered graduate students in humanities doctoral programs an opportunity to learn about and experience best practices in teaching and learning.

Each year, a cohort of students working in small teams creates instructional materials and materials ready for the job market. Focusing on translating research into practice, students are given guidance on how to create meaningful learning experiences for any level of audience in sessions led by prominent scholars, master educators, and technology experts. Most importantly, the design of the residency requires direct and collegial work among students from different universities and disciplines, creating opportunities to engage with a much broader network of humanities professionals.

Program Overview

The 2025 Graduate Student Summer Residency Program is a comprehensive initiative designed to equip graduate students in the humanities with fundamental principles in research, pedagogy, and grant development. Participants will engage in hands-on workshops that explore innovative research methodologies, effective teaching strategies, and the intricacies of securing grant funding. Through interactive panel discussions, collaborative projects, and one-on-one mentoring sessions, students will refine both their academic and professional skills. The event fosters the development of instructional techniques and career-building strategies, preparing participants for success in both academic and non-academic career paths.

Session topics will explore:

  • Universal Design Practices and Instructional Methodology
  • Teaching Strategies for Research-Driven Engagement
  • Foundations for Digital Humanities and AI Integration
  • Professional Pathways for a Humanities Career
  • Core Competencies for Collaboration and Inclusivity
