Director of the Library Joseph Milillo joined the staff of the National Humanities Center in 2016, bringing a varied background in the humanities, social sciences, and health information research. In addition to the master of library science degree from East Carolina University, which he earned while working at the Center, Joseph holds a master of religious studies with a focus on South Asian philosophy from Harvard University.

In his current role, Joseph is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the library, drawing on his expertise in bibliographic research and his relationships with libraries around the world to procure over 12,000 resources each year for Fellows and other scholars. In addition to managing circulation, Joseph works closely with each class of Fellows to provide in-depth reference services. Joseph also supports the Center’s staff in education programs, professional development, and administration by fulfilling their research and resource needs. Some of Joseph’s reference specialties are in legal research, government documents, Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests, and also Consciousness Studies, but he is most at home in early Indian and Chinese philosophy and intellectual history.
