These institutions offer places of learning and discovery for all Americans, aiming to help us understand our past without imposing a predetermined interpretation.

Respecting the independence of research-based institutions and the expertise of professionals is fundamental to humanistic practices. The Smithsonian has already committed to conducting its own internal review, adhering to established scholarly standards. The Smithsonian must be allowed to fulfill its mission without fear of political backlash or ideological pressure.
