The National Humanities Center Announces Incoming Class of Select Summer Residents

March 26, 2026

The National Humanities Center (NHC) is pleased to announce the appointment of 40 scholars for the 2026 Select Summer Residency Program, marking the first time NHC summer residents have undergone a competitive application process. These leading humanists will come to the Center from universities and colleges in 19 US states and India. They represent a variety of public research institutions, private universities, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and liberal arts colleges.

Each summer resident will work on an individual humanities-related research project in a private office in the Center’s secluded, light-filled building, and participate in the Center’s storied intellectual community. They will also have access to professional development seminars and lectures, the Center’s library services, and daily meals prepared on site.

These scholars constitute the seventh class of summer residents since the NHC initiated the program in 2018. “We are so excited to welcome these incredible scholars to our halls,” said Martha Kelly, vice president for scholarly programs at the Center. “We look forward to their arrival in June, and to the community they will foster as they discuss their diverse intellectual interests.”

“I am honored to welcome my first class of summer residents as director and president of the National Humanities Center,” said Blair LM Kelley. “Having been a summer resident myself in the past, I know well how much these scholars will gain from their time together here.”
