William Ray engaged in research on eighteenth-century theories of culture, aesthetics, and the museum; drafted three chapters of a book focusing on the relationship of the French novel to the ideology of high culture; and completed two essays: "Observing the Law: Revolutionary Journal-ism and the Formation of the Citizen" and "Rethinking Reading: The Novel and Cultural Stratification."
