Fellowship Work Summary, 2001–02

Sylvia Berryman researched two chapters of her book project, Mechanical Explanation in Ancient Greek Philosophy, concerning ancient Greek conceptions of mechanics, pneumatics, and the power of the void. She also worked on two articles, one on the philosophical role of ancient automata in inspiring "mechanical" conceptions of organisms, entitled "Ancient Automata and Mechanical Explanation," and the other on Philoponus's ideas about the properties of mixtures, entitled "Necessity, Explanation and Supervenience in Philoponus."
