Fellowship Work Summary, 2024–25
Shengqing Wu drafted four chapters of her work in progress, Reconfiguring Intimacy: Kiss, Touch, and Modern Love in China, significantly expanding the theoretical framework and material scope of the book project. By examining intimate tactile experiences through comparative and theoretical lenses, this book manuscript offers previously unexamined historical accounts of modern China’s tactile experiences and romantic love, providing a new understanding of the relationship of embodied experience, affect, and literary modernity.
Additionally, she revised and proofread her article, “Theater of Emotion: The Affective Face in Republican Visual Culture,” which is set to appear in the anthology, Affect and Materiality: Emotions in Chinese Art (coedited by Jeehee Hong and Wu Hung) from Art Media Resources in Chicago in 2025.
