Fellowship Work Summary, 1992–93

Robert W. Smith added a new chapter to the paperback version of his book, The Space Telescope: A Study of NASA, Science, Technology, and Politics (Cambridge University Press, 1993); collaborated with J. Tatarewicz on "Counting on Invention: Devices, Telescopes, Very Big Science, and Black Boxes," accepted for publication in Osiris; and drafted a 20,000-word interpretive essay on "The History of Big Science in Twentieth-Century America" for the Encyclopedia of the United States in the Twentieth Century, edited by Stanley Kutler (Simon and Schuster). These pieces will form sections of a monograph on the history of big science, for which he also drafted a chapter titled "Leviathans and Other Engines of Discovery."
