Lawrence Lipking focused on his book, Samuel Johnson: The Life of an Author, writing three chapters and revising three others. His review article—"When You're in Love"— appeared in the February 28, 1994 issue of The New Republic, and he completed several other essays: "Imperialistic Angels: Lycidas, Adamastor, and the Poetics of Nationalism," "Frankenstein, the True Story; or Rousseau Judges Jean-Jacques," and "Gods of Enlightenment: Mythology and the Eighteenth-Century Tradition."
