Atkins researched and drafted the introductory chapter of her current book project, 'Questionable Haven': South Africa as an Immigration Site for Freed Slaves and Their Descendants from North America, 1783-1870. A portion of the chapter appeared as "'The Black Atlantic Communication Network': African American Sailors and the Cape of Good Hope Connection, 1783-1830" in Issues: Journal of Opinion (August 1996).
