Fellowship Work Summary, 1993–94

Janet J. Ewald focused on two essays for forthcoming collections—"Building a State and Struggling over Land," to be included in State, Land, and Society in Sudanic Africa, edited by Donald Crummey, and "A Moment in the Middle: Reflections on Fieldwork in Taqali, Sudan" for Historical Fieldwork in Africa, edited by Carolyn Adenaike and Jan Vansina. She began work on a book-length manuscript, "Crossing the Red Sea: Transport, Slavery, and Free Labor, 1800-1910," and drafted an article provisionally entitled "Maritime and Port Labor in the Red Sea, 1830-1910."
