Fellowship Work Summary, 1997–98

George Saliba completed a book in Arabic, the translated title of which is The Rise and Development of Arabic Scientific Thought, to be published by Balamand University Press (Lebanon); and an article on "Astronomy in Medieval Islamic Spain," under review at al‑Qantara, a periodical published in Spain. He lectured in Phi Beta Kappa's Associate Lectureship Program at the University of Arkansas, and at Jacksonville State University, Ala.; and gave a public lecture at the National Humanities Center on "Arabic Science in Renaissance Europe," and another on "Problems of Periodization in Islamic Intellectual History," for the North Carolina Comparative Islamic Studies Seminar. He spoke at Colgate University and at Columbia University, and gave several lectures in Kuwait and Lebanon. He attended the conference of the Middle Eastern Studies Association in San Francisco.
