Gary Shapiro concentrated on his book, Earthwards: Robert Smithson and Art after Babel (University of California Press, 1995), writing the preface and appendix, gathering illustrations, and making a number of revisions. For another project, a study of language and the visual arts tentatively entitled The Philosophical Eye: Ekphrasis in Recent French Thought, he drafted two hundred pages.
