Fellowship Work Summary, 1995–96

David Strand wrote several essays—"'A High Place Is No Better than a Low Place': The Modern City in the Making of Urban China," to be included in an edited conference volume, Chinese Passages through Modernity; "Beyond Coast and Capital: Pressures and Previsions in the Making of the Modern Chinese City" for Wall and Market: Chinese Urban History News (Spring 1996); and "Calling the Chinese People to Order: Sun Yat-sen's Rhetoric of Development" for a volume that he is editing with Kjeld Erik Brødsgaard, Reconstructing Twentieth Century China: State Control, Civil Society, and National Identity, a conference volume sponsored by the Contemporary China Institute, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
