Brenda E. Stevenson wrote and published “Out of the Mouths of Ex-Slaves: Carter G. Woodson’s Journal of Negro History ‘Invents’ the Study of Slavery” for the Journal of African American History vol. 100,1 (Winter 2016). She also wrote a chapter on “Performing Social Status in Slavery and Freedom: Southern Black Marital Rituals, 1840-1900” which has been accepted for publication.
