Fellowship Work Summary, 1998–99

Alex Owen completed most of her book Magic and Modernity: Occult, Culture, and Self in Fin-de-Siècle Britain, to be published by the University of Chicago Press. As a visiting fellow at the Center for the Comparative Study of Social Transformations at the University of Michigan, she gave a lecture, delivered a paper, and conducted a workshop for graduate students. She was invited to speak at the Social History Society conference on "Self and Society," in York, England, and spoke on "Magic and the Modern Self in Fin-de-Siècle Britain," as part of the Center's public lecture series. She was a participant in the Triangle Intellectual History Seminar.
