Reconciling the Humanities and STEM: Methods, Models, and Impact
2025 HBCU Humanities and STEM Faculty Institute
August 4–8, 2025, at Howard University

The integration of the humanities and STEM is crucial for fostering innovation, critical thinking, and a more nuanced understanding of our world. By combining the analytical rigor of the sciences with the critical thinking and cultural understanding of the humanities, we can address complex societal challenges and develop sound interdisciplinary solutions. From healthcare to environmental science, technology to literature, the synergy between these fields is pioneering new discoveries and shaping a more sustainable future for our world.
The HBCU Humanities and STEM Faculty Institute series, a collaborative effort between the National Humanities Center and the College of Arts & Sciences at Howard University, will explore how these disciplines can be integrated to produce groundbreaking research, innovative teaching practices, and socially responsible solutions. Over five days, participants will delve into the intersection of these fields to explore cutting-edge research practices, innovative teaching methodologies, and effective strategies for funding these intersecting projects.
By bringing together leading scholars and dedicated educators, the institute will foster a collaborative environment where participants can share ideas, exchange best practices, and develop lasting inter-institutional relationships. Through engaging workshops, panel discussions, and hands-on activities, participants will gain the tools and knowledge needed to develop new research questions while creating dynamic and impactful learning experiences for their students.
Join us on the historic campus of Howard University as we explore the future of interdisciplinary education and empower the next generation of scholars, educators, and campus leaders.
Session topics will include:
- Methods of Inquiry for Humanities and STEM Integration
- Interdisciplinary and Inter-Institutional Research Opportunities
- Course Development, Curriculum Planning, and Instructional Strategy
