Internet and digital technology companies like to celebrate their never-before-seen innovations. But looking beyond the marketing hype, we can find similar stories about the impact of new technologies emerging in the past. As the scholar John Durham Peters puts it, “The history of new media is old.” Learning this history of emerging media helps us, in turn, better adapt to our own new media moment.

In this webinar, participants can expect to leave with a firmer understanding of the precursors for contemporary digital media by discussing the development of new media, telecommunications, information collection, privacy concerns, and anxieties during the Victorian era through literary examples.
