Kathleen DuVal’s book, Native Nations: A Millennium in North America, chronicles a thousand years of Indigenous history in North America and reframes centuries of Native American agency.

DuVal’s masterful work complicates and transforms popular notions about American history by examining Indigenous peoples’ sophisticated political, diplomatic, and economic systems which have persisted up until the present moment. Native Nations garnered critical acclaim upon its release and has been recognized with multiple awards, including the 2025 Pulitzer Prize for History and the Bancroft Prize for American history writing.
