Support the Humanities: Flora Scroop-Reid Childcare Bursary

The Flora Scroop-Reid Childcare Bursary Fund is designed to support NHC residential Fellows by offsetting a portion of preschool childcare during the fellowship year.

Easing some of the financial burden on scholars with young children allows them to more fully engage in professional commitments without sacrificing the quality of care for their children. Your support for this important fund can be transformative for these scholars, ensuring that they can balance family responsibilities with the demands of their fellowship.

About Flora Scroop-Reid

In 2016, NHC Fellow Daniel Scroop and literary scholar Julia Reid lost their beloved three-year-old daughter, Flora, shortly after concluding their year at the National Humanities Center.

Flora took great joy in life. Coming to North Carolina was an adventure for her, and it was here that she began to blossom into her own person, attending daycare for the first time just across the road from the NHC.

Daniel and Julia understood that finding and funding childcare in a new city is challenging and often presents a significant financial hardship to scholars living on a fixed income during their time at the Center. Therefore, in memory of Flora, the couple established a childcare bursary in 2019 to help defray preschool childcare costs for a Fellow and their family every year.
