Critical AI Literacy and the Humanities

Artificial intelligence has become an increasingly visible part of education, raising important questions about technology, ethics, creativity, and the role of the humanities. Rather than focusing only on how AI functions, critical AI literacy encourages educators and students to examine how these technologies operate within larger social, cultural, and political systems.

Drawing on their work leading AI and Digital Literacy Institutes in partnership with the National Humanities Center, professors Conrad and Kamperman introduce a framework for understanding AI through a humanities lens. Participants will explore insights gathered from educators in secondary and postsecondary institutions and examine resources that support thoughtful classroom conversations about AI. The session will help teachers strengthen their own critical understanding of AI and share it with their students and other educational stakeholders by asking informed questions about technology, power, responsibility, and ethical decision-making.
