Navigating Religious Questions and Concerns in the Classroom

A student asks about the meaning of a passage from the Qur’an during a world history lesson. Another wonders whether evolution contradicts the Bible in biology class. A third asks about the differences between Mormons and other Christian traditions while studying American history. Questions about religion arise naturally across the curriculum and provide valuable opportunities for learning, yet many educators are uncertain about how to respond in ways that are accurate, respectful, and appropriate for the classroom.

This webinar introduces educators to frameworks from the academic study of religion that support the objective, non-confessional study of religious traditions, texts, and practices across subject areas. Participants will explore the important distinction between teaching religion and teaching about religion, while considering how religious literacy strengthens students’ historical, cultural, and civic understanding. Educators will leave with practical strategies and classroom resources for thoughtfully addressing questions about religion in history, literature, science, and other disciplines, helping students engage complex topics with curiosity, respect, and critical inquiry.
