Connecting Research and Learning Across Disciplines

About

The collaboration between the humanities and STEM is crucial for fostering innovation, critical thinking, and a more nuanced understanding of our world. By combining the analytical rigor and critical thinking skills developed within the sciences and the humanities, we can address complex societal challenges and reach sound interdisciplinary solutions. From healthcare to environmental science, technology to literature, the synergy between these fields is pioneering new discoveries and shaping a more sustainable future for our world.

The HBCU Humanities and STEM Faculty Institute series, a collaborative effort between the National Humanities Center and the College of Arts & Sciences at Howard University, explores the ways that these disciplines can partner together to produce groundbreaking research, innovative teaching practices, and socially responsible solutions.

The HBCU Humanities and STEM Faculty Institute originally planned for August 3–7, 2026, at Howard University, will be rescheduled to August 2027. While we look forward to convening in person next year, we encourage faculty to be on the lookout for additional virtual events this fall that will continue meaningful and necessary conversations around integrating the humanities and STEM.

These virtual opportunities will provide space for participants to share ideas, exchange best practices, and build connections across institutions. Through scholar-led sessions and discussions, attendees will explore integrated research questions and dynamic instructional approaches.

When the institute convenes in August 2027, participants will join us on the historic campus of Howard University as we explore the future of interdisciplinary education and empower the next generation of scholars, educators, and campus leaders.
