Free Training in Seminar Development at the National Humanities Center

November 14-15 and
November 21-22, 2003

Registration Deadline: October 10, 2003
· Registration form (PDF file)

The National Humanities Center will offer two training sessions—November 14-15 and November 21-22, 2003—to show curriculum coordinators, professional development specialists, school-university liaisons, lead teachers, department chairs, and other appropriate personnel how to use the Center's online seminar toolboxes to create local interdisciplinary teacher professional development seminars in American history and literature. Enrollment in each session will be limited to teams from ten districts. The Center will provide housing, meals, and material. A school district need only cover the travel expenses of its representatives to the Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

A district should send a team of two representatives—one in history or social studies, the other in English or language arts. The training will be aimed at organizing local professional development seminars using the Center's online resources in the summer of 2004.

The training will explain the theory of professional development that informs toolbox seminars and will show seminar organizers how to
  • promote local seminars and recruit participants;
  • recruit and collaborate with consulting scholars;
  • custom design a seminar syllabus using an online toolbox and texts recommended by participating consultants and teachers;
  • conduct local seminars that combine content study with the development of instructional strategies;
  • and implement follow-up activities to bolster and evaluate the impact of the seminar.
The training will also explore various budgeting options and fund-raising strategies.
