Jim Crow

The practice in the U.S. South from Reconstruction through 1964 of segregating black and white people in most aspects of public life (public buildings and vehicles, employment, voting rights, etc.). Before the Civil War, "Jim Crow" was a widely-known negative caricature of a plantation slave presented in minstrel shows by white performers in blackface.
