Live, Online Professional Development Seminars for North Carolina Teachers of U.S. History and American Literature
Summer 2009 General Information
Registration Deadline: May 22, 2009
Sponsors: The seminars, based on the NC Standard Course of Study in U.S. history, were designed by the National Humanities Center in close collaboration with the NC Department of Public Instruction.
Eligible Teachers: The seminars are open to teachers of U.S. history or American literature in North Carolina high schools.
Cost: Thanks to a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, the Center is able to offer these seminars at no cost to teachers.
Stipends: Participants in a seminar will receive a stipend of $100.
Format: Led by distinguished scholars, each seminar will consist of three sessions. Sessions one and two will consist of lecture and discussion and will feature the close analysis of images and primary documents. Session three will concentrate on integrating seminar ideas and materials into lesson plans using the Center's Seminar-to-Classroom Guide.
Assignments: Three to four weeks before the seminar, participants will receive the syllabus, which will require fifty to seventy-five pages of reading. Each participant will be expected to complete a Seminar-to-Classroom Guide on a syllabus text of his or her choice and e-mail the completed Guide to the National Humanities Center prior to the seminar. During the seminar the Guides will serve as the focus of a discussion of instructional content and strategies.
Texts: Seminar texts, provided free online, will be drawn chiefly from the Center's Toolbox Library and from TeacherServe®.
Recertification Credit: The National Humanities Center programs are eligible for recertification credit. Each online seminar provides ten hours of instruction: four hours of online instruction, four hours of preparation, and a two-hour online follow-up session. Each seminar may yield one CEU credit. Because the seminars are conducted online, they may qualify for technology credit in districts that award it. The Center will supply documentation of participation.
Technical Requirements: The seminars are conducted online through conferencing software. To participate, a teacher will need a computer with an internet connection, speakers, and a microphone. The Center will provide, for free, a headset with a built in microphone.
