John G. Medlin, Jr. (1933 - 2012)
The Trustees and staff of the National Humanities Center are deeply saddened by the passing of trustee emeritus John G. Medlin, Jr., who died suddenly yesterday in Linville, N.C., at the age of 78. As chairman of Wachovia Corporation for 17 years, he led the company from its roots as a community bank in western North Carolina to become one of the top 25 financial institutions in the United States.
Medlin was an iconic figure not only in business circles but as a civic and state leader, noted for his integrity and passion. He became a trustee of the Center in 1990 and served for 15 years, taking up the mantle of Archie Davis, the former chairman of Wachovia who had been instrumental in establishing the Center in North Carolina. A tireless supporter of the Center and the state of North Carolina, he had remained active in retirement, carefully following the progress of all the institutions to which he had devoted himself for so many years.
His leadership, friendship, and support will be greatly missed.
