National Humanities Center Celebrates Thirtieth Anniversary
News Release Date: May 12, 2009
On April 16 and 17 over 200 guests attended the Center's celebration marking thirty years since the dedication of the Archie K. Davis building in April 1979. Among the trustees, friends of the Center, current and former staff members, were nearly 100 Fellows representing 25 class years.
Festivities marking this milestone included a reception and pig pickin' on Thursday evening followed by brief, good-natured comments from a handful of past Fellows, each presenting the case for why their Fellowship year was the Center's best. On Friday morning, after breakfast in the Commons, attendees gathered for a stimulating panel discussion of "New Directions in the Humanities." The panel was moderated by Trustee William Jordan, Princeton University, and included presentations from Trustee Ed Ayers, University of Richmond; Gerald Early, Washington University (Fellow 2001-02); Trustee Catherine Gallagher, University of California, Berkeley (Fellow 2005-06); Trustee Michael Ann Holly, Clark Art Institute; and Trustee Philip Khoury, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
