National Humanities Center Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration
April 16-17, 2009
News Release Date: March 2, 2009
On April 7, 1979, as the first fellowship year drew to a close, Charles Frankel, the Center's first director spoke at a ceremony marking the dedication of our building, asking those assembled, "Can we be arrested in our work for at least a moment and take thought about what it represents?" Thirty years later, we will pause to reflect on the Center's history, note our accomplishments including the work of over 1,100 Fellows, and consider the course that lies ahead for the humanities. Past and present Fellows, trustees, and staff will gather with friends for a two-day celebration that begins with a Carolina pig pickin' on Thursday, April 16 and continues on Friday with breakfast, a panel discussion on "New Directions in the Humanities," a luncheon, and reunion activities for Fellows from previous years.
