Jean Bethke Elshtain is the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Professor of Social and Political Ethics at the University of Chicago
and has served as a Trustee of the National Humanities Center. Professor Elshtain is the author of many books, including
Democracy on Trial, which was a New York Times Notable Book for 1995. She spent 2000-01 as a Fellow at the Center, where she completed an intellectual biography, Jane Addams and the Dream of American Democracy, and prepared an anthology of Jane Addams' writings. Basic Books will publish both books in December 2001. At the Center, she also
began a major new work, Sovereign God, Sovereign State, Sovereign Self.
