Geoffrey Harpham, President and Director of the National Humanities Center

The National Humanities Center began operation in 1978 as the nation's only independent institute for advanced study in the humanities. Since then nearly one thousand scholars from the United States and more than thirty other countries have held fellowships at our campus in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, where they have produced more than 1,100 books in some 44 fields. Among institutes for advanced study, the National Humanities Center is distinctive in its commitment to linking scholarship and improved teaching. The model programs we have developed provide teachers with new materials and instructional strategies to make them more effective in the classroom and rekindle their enthusiasm for the subjects they teach.

Whether you are a scholar seeking information about our fellowship program, a teacher in need of an essay on Native American religion in early America, or a friend interested in the latest news about our fellows, I welcome you to this Web site, and hope you will find it interesting and enlightening.
